Gina E, Composition ID Washington, DC client, had just started her macro journey when she spoke to us about her first impressions with challenging but flexible protocol. Read on to learn about her first takes on counting macros and what she recommends to keep on track when starting a new nutrition plan.

What nutrition plan have you been following and for how long?

I’ve been following a macro-specific plan for about two weeks – not long!

Describe your results/progress to-date.

Transitioning from not following any sort of plan to tracking macros has been challenging, but rewarding. I went from eating anything (and everything) I wanted to basically doing the same, just paying more attention to portion sizes and distribution of macros. Over the past few weeks of tracking meals/snacks/exercise in MyFitnessPal, I’ve learned that a lot of food I thought was ‘healthy’ was actually very high in fat or sodium. I think just the overarching awareness of food and portion sizes has really made an impact on how I think about what I’m going to eat and how I plan out my week. I’ve also seen cost-savings in terms of preparing food at home, versus eating out regularly. The residual impact is that I feel much more in control of my overall health and I’m excited to continue seeing even more results in the coming months.

What’s the biggest challenge you have faced while following this plan?

The biggest challenge for me is prep and planning. I travel a lot for work, and when I’m home I’m often out of my house from 8am-10pm. Grateful for 24-hour grocery stores, I’ve been able to pick up easy, healthy things and prepare enough to get in a really hearty breakfast and prep healthy snacks to fuel throughout the day.

What advice do you have for others interested in this plan?

I really love the flexibility of the macro-specific plan, especially being on-the-go so much. I also love that I can eat whatever I want, so long as I work it into my overall macro “bank account” for the day. If it’s something you’re thinking about, I would absolutely recommend tracking in MyFitnessPal to stay accountable.
